Today is Mid-Autumn Festival. It falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the Chinese calendar. Farmers celebrate the end of the summer harvesting season on this date. Traditionally, on this day, Chinese family members and friends will gather to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon, and eat moon cakes and pomeloes together. People carry brightly lit lanterns which seem like the beautiful fireflies in the night. Our family gathered for a steamboat dinner this evening. Though it was a wet day, the fire in our hearts was burning. What could be more warm than the love between a family, especially on this very special day? After then, we went to Chinatown for a brisk walk. Strangely, this night was especially quiet (we expect a crowd). We blamed it on the rain. But what we really thought was that times are really bad and that people are not really spending this year. There’s always onlookers but few buyers.
Comparison to the above, mooncakes from Fragrance Foodstuff is more hardy and looks like machine made. But price was a steal at $13 for a box of four (lotus paste without egg yolk) and it comes with a free metal tea mug. We also found some interesting mini ones from Princess Hong Kong, err…. some brand that is alien to us. At $1 each, we brought 10 pcs (mixture of green tea, red bean and lotus). Its paper thin skin is a surprise to us though. Paste is not too sweet too.
And what cannot be missing are the “piglets”, and oh “rabbits” too.
